Guide to Lateral Flow Immunoassays
August 23rd, 2017
The main application to drive the development of early lateral flow immunoassays was the human pregnancy test, which relied on the detection of human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. hCG is a hormone which is secreted during the early stages of pregnancy, and plays an essential role in early pregnancy survival; its presence in urine can be used to determine a pregnancy. These first lateral flow immunoassays clearly demonstrated the utility of point-of-care (POC) testing, and paved the way for the evolution of a wide range of tests.
